Ivana Dobrakovová was born in Bratislava in 1982. She is one of the most original and compelling figures in contemporary Slovak literature. She is a writer and literary translator from French and Italian, and has been living in Turin since 2005. Dobrakovová has authored both novels and short stories and has been met with critical and public acclaim since her debut work, the short story collection Prvá smrť v rodine (The First Death in the Family), which earned her the Ján Johanides Literary Award for Young Authors in 2009. She has received numerous literary awards in Slovakia, both for her translations—including works by Emmanuel Carrère from French and by Elena Ferrante and Valeria Parrella from Italian—and for her prose. She has been a finalist for the prestigious Slovak literary prize Anasoft Litera every year thus far. Her book Mothers and Truckers (Matky a kamionisti) won the European Union Prize for Literature in 2019. The book has been translated into twelve languages and was published in Italy by Spider&Fish in 2021.
