Jana Beňová (1974) lives in Bratislava, where she studied at the Academy of Performing Arts, obtaining a degree in drama. As a poet, writer and journalist, she worked for several magazines including the newspaper SME, where she wrote from 2002 to 2008 under the name of Jana Parkrová. She published three collections of poems and the narrative texts Parker (2000), Dvanásť poviedok a Ján Med (Twelve tales and Ján Med, 2003), Preč! Preč! (Away! Away!, 2012), Honeymoon (2015). She was twice finalist of the most eminent literary prize of Slovakia, “Anasoft litera”, in 2009 and in 2013. Café Hyena, published in Italy by Atmosphere libri (2017), won the EU Prize for Literature in 2012. Through the use of an original, dense, ironic, poetic language, the novel describes the captivating personal journey of four artists searching for their own identity. The story takes place in a country newly introduced to the mechanisms of democracy and consumerism, but also involved in the market rules of other European countries.
